Mirena

For women seeking a long-term, reversible method of birth control, the Mirena® IUD is one of the most effective devices on the market. This hormone-releasing system is placed in your uterus and designed to prevent pregnancy for up to five years – you won’t even know it’s there! When you are ready to start a family, you can have the Mirena® device removed, and there is no wait time to observe before you begin conception. Mirena® was approved by the FDA in 2000 for use as a contraception device, and in 2009 as a treatment for heavy periods. The hormone levonorgestrel is released from the IUD into the uterus, and thickens cervical mucus to prevent sperm from fertilization. Having Mirena® Placed: Inserted by your healthcare provider during an office visit Typically takes just a few minutes Cramps, dizziness and/or bleeding are common side effects. Ask your healthcare provider about over-the-counter pain medication you can take to minimize cramps Let your healthcare provider know if your side effects are severe or last more than 30 minutes as Mirena may not have been properly placed. Mirena® is recommended for patients who have already had one or more children and seek long-term but not permanent birth control. If you have experienced pelvic infections or illnesses in the past, this device may not be recommended for your use. We strongly advise a consultation with one of our doctors to determine the right birth control method for you. For more questions on Mirena® and other types of contraception, please call The Group for Women at 757-466-5751.

Minimally Invasive

Recover Quicker! Less Pain! Less Scarring! Get Back to Your Life! Minimally Invasive Surgical Procedures mean that your doctor with The Group for Women can perform the recommended procedure through tiny incisions instead of one large opening. The doctor passes a long, thin tube through the incision. The tube has a miniature camera attached at the end, called an endoscope. Tubes attached to small instruments are passed through the other openings. By maneuvering instruments, your doctor is able to investigate and see the area in question and remove or repair whatever is wrong. Why is Minimally Invasive Surgery a good alternative? When your doctor can perform your surgery with smaller incisions, you have a better chance of recovering quicker with less discomfort than conventional surgery. Less tissue is affected with less scarring. When indicated, your doctor will make the choice and recommend that your surgery is performed using this Minimally Invasive technique. In some cases, your doctor may not be able to see everything and may have to use a larger incision. Your doctor will explain all of this and more before your surgery. Most Minimally Invasive Surgeries are performed as out-patient, so you can go home the same day to recuperate. Some surgeries, however, may require you to stay overnight in the hospital. da Vinci Surgical System

The Group for Women’s Dr. Wentworth, Dr. Kreider, and Dr. Pascioni are trained and qualified with the high-tech da Vinci® Surgical System. This cutting edge surgical technology is minimally invasive, allowing the patient to heal faster with less pain. When medication and non-invasive procedures are unable to relieve symptoms, surgery remains the accepted and most effective treatment for a range of gynecologic conditions. These include, but are not limited to, cervical and uterine cancer, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, uterine prolapse and menorrhagia or excessive bleeding. Traditional open gynecologic surgery, using a large incision for access to the uterus and surrounding anatomy, has for many years been the standard approach to many gynecologic procedures. Yet with open surgery can come significant pain, trauma, a long recovery process and threat to surrounding organs and nerves. For women facing gynecologic surgery, the period of pain, discomfort and extended time away from normal daily activities that usually follows traditional surgery can understandably cause significant anxiety. For complex hysterectomies and other gynecologic procedures, robot-assisted surgery with the da Vinci® Surgical System may be the most effective, least invasive treatment option. Through tiny, 1-2 cm incisions, surgeons using the da Vinci System* can operate with greater precision and control, minimizing the pain and risk associated with large incisions while increasing the likelihood of a fast recovery and excellent clinical outcomes.
